Sewing Basics
-hand needles, variety
-small scissors/thread snips
-seam ripper
-tape measure
often these items will come in a small kit together!
Fursuit Necessities
-hot glue gun & sticks
-utility knife: one with a good grip and refillable snap blades
-quilting pins or fabric clips: normal straight pins are often too small and short and get lost in fur, quilting pins are longer with a colored ball on top so they're easier to find in the pile. clips are great too but sometimes it's easier to stitch over a pin than keep removing clips on a tight curve/corner
-slicker brush: for picking the pile from the seams and maintaining the finished suit
-clippers: either pet or rug grade, to shave down fur to shorter lengths if needed
Advanced Sewing - Nice-to-have but optional
-curved needles: These are so much better to stitch through fur with.
-sewing machine: Budget for something at least $100. Singer Heavy Duty is good, but cheaper Singer and Brother models will not last through making fursuits.
-machine notions: extra bobbins, light/heavy needles, etc
-fabric shears: you may not be cutting fur with them, but you'll want good dedicated scissors for cutting lining and other materials. The memes about not cutting paper with your fabric scissors is Very Real.
-tailors chalk: to mark out the patterns on your fabric before cutting, easier to wipe/wash away than using pencil or marker
-scissors sharpener:
Project Specific
-fabric: your fur, lining, and any other materials to construct the suit
-foam: upholstery/urethane foam for solid shaping of heads/etc, EVA foam for structural bits like ears or foot bottoms
-thread: matching thread colors to your material; coats & clark all-purpose is fine for most uses.
-elastic: often 1" braided elastic bands can be used in head straps and for securing armsleeves
-zippers: your bodysuit entrance zipper most importantly, but also any smaller ones for padding access, head/neck, etc.
-eye mesh: vinyl aida or high-shade window screen to hide vision ports
-polyfill: to stuff your padded bits
-etc: maybe you need felt for eyelids/lashes, magnets for removable bits, electronics for a fan or LEDs, armature wire for wings/antennae...
